Pet Peeves, Brock's Block and Man Labor

I was driving Pokeboss back to her car after we hung out with captain peanut, Naysayer P Squirrel and Terrific Craniac and I suddenly said, I think my next blog is going to be about pet peeves. So it shall be.

Whenever I get asked what are your pet peeves I always have trouble coming up with a good answer. Its like the what's your most embarrassing moment question. I have plenty of answers but I can only seem to think of one: the time in the 4th grade when I did the ymca with a few friends dressed like the Indian from the village people, complete with a skirt, no shirt, bear claws painted on my chest, and pelvic thrusts. At the time this wasn't embarrassing but in retrospect... yea...

Anyways I at first can only think of one pet peeve: slow walkers. Again its not really that peeving, I usually don't have trouble going around. In fact some may even accuse me of slow walking, not because I'm slow but because I have a slow gait to compensate for my long strides. This results in my taking steps slower (usually to not outrace those I'm walking with) and often resulting in me getting flat tired from behind. Fortunately for me and all involved, getting a flat tire is not a pet peeve. It happens all too often I've grown used to it.

But what made me think of pet peeves is that I think I have a lot of driving pet peeves. These things too happen all the time, but they always frustrate me. So I think i'll start with the driving peeves and move to other things that annoy me:

  • People who don't signal and thus prevent me from making a right. Picture yourself exiting a neighborhood, no signals, and you have clear road except for on car in the lane you want to turn to. You wait for him to pass but at the last second he suddenly turns. You could have turned if he has signaled, but now you have to wait for the next wave of cars to pass to try again. Yea. Annoyed.
  • Pedestrians. Im terrified ill hit one. Some walk with a sense of entitlement, some walk super slow, some cross the street just spaced far enough apart to give you the hope that you can turn and then they speed up and step into the street, they push the crosswalk button ensuring that the opposing signal will last longer because a person is crossing (i esp. Hate this when there is no cross traffic just pedestrians). Yea I sometimes wish they really were worth points if you just went ahead and hit em.
  • Bikes that think they are cars.
  • High beams when not necessary/super bright lights...
  • Braking for no reason, esp. On the freeway. Why are you braking?? Just ease off the gas...
  • Slowing down for a green light....
  • People who don't pay attention to the lights when im far back in line and cause me to just miss the light.
  • When all lanes on freeways have cars side by side going about the same speed usually at or under the speed limit with no cars in front of them thereby creating a wall I am unable to pass and am stuck going slow...
  • Detours/exit/on ramps signs that are unclear, confusing or wrong
  • Esp. On four lane highways (two each direction) when someone is slow in the fast lane but wont get over to the slow lane to let you pass on the left. Vice versa someone is so fast in the fast lane that they pass you on the right before you have time to get outta of their way and thereby disrupting the agreed terms mentions in the first sentence.
  • Stops signs that are hidden/in unusual or low low low traffic areas

I think there's a pattern here: things that prevent me from doing the speed I want to do.

Other peeves:

  • Waiting in lines. I avoid this so much cuz it just. Bothers me. I can't sit still I guess.
  • Spam mail/texts/calls
  • An unwilling to compromise or at least communicate why they wont and get defensive and angry for no reason. This sounds specific but its a common thing, especially the getting angry for no apparent reason part... this makes me really frustrated.
  • Grudges
  • Getting my curiosity piqued but not satisfied. Ie saying "I have something to tell you" but don't actually tell you or make you wait for it. They say curiosity killed the cat but I need my curiosity gratified regardless. I am on an unending quest for information.
  • An unflushed toilet. This is related to my least favorite sound: water dripping on wet paper. So random and yet I so hate it.
  • Being told what to do by someone not qualified to do so.
  • Braggarts. By this I mean people who think they are better than others.
  • Spiderwebs in my face

Um that's all I can think of right now. This list I think paints me as someone who gets angry at a lot of stupid little things and while in some cases that may be true most of these things are exactly what I called them. Peeves. Thy annoy me. But im usually over them pretty fast. That's my outlook in general. Minor annoyances can be quickly put behind you. And for big ones, im always looking to get to the forgive and move on part. I know it just takes time.

I have a few other stories to share with y'all.

First for Brock's Block, this week was his birthday. I didn't make it to the whole party (his birthday is also my mom's, more on that later) but I do know that he and Mama Goldfish has a join party with AVP, Bridges, RC Tequila, and Kareem went out to dinner and met up with Diet Lemonade and Settler Type at a fun bar after an hour and a half cab wait. Tenshi and I returned from my mom's party to provide snacks our drunken compatriots. Brock passed out on the futon still shouting his usual racial and vulgar slurs that he finds amusing when drunk. RC Tequila, after recounting his drunken escapades escaping a mean bouncer, tried to convince Kareem and I (both English majors, Kareem's in grad school for it) to take up novel writing. AVP, and Tenshi listened amusedly. And Mama G dumped water on her phone. The usual fun hot messes of birthday bashes, though much more tame than some of our other parties.

Brock the night before, with help from Tenshi and RC Tequila, had managed to convince me to do a dramatic reading of a Lady Gaga song about which I was unfamiliar. I don't know why I do these things. I know they are laughing at hearing risque words come out of my generally clean mouth. But it was fun. I'm sure it'll be on youtube soon, once RC Tequila and Brock get their video blog going. Yup, it cannot be said I'm not willing to make a fool of myself for others amusement. See YMCA story above.

As for my mom's party. Tenshi and I were a little late as usual but we showed up and the first thing my mom shouts is OK YOUR TURN? What? They were doing tequila shots! My whole family, mom dad, aunt, grandparents, brother even my 18 year old sister and her friend! It was a little surreal, a little funny and just all around amazing. They were four in I believe and even my dad was tipsy (and he never drinks that much). We chased the drinks with margaritas (a family party staple) and then were loose enough to play Just Dance on my parents wii. Just rereading those last few sentences I question if anyone can tell the difference between a party for my mom and the many college parties we've had... oh life!

Sunday was spent shopping for frames and furniture for Tenshi's apartment. I started this blog yesterday actually but realized I had so much to say that I had to finish it today. Sorry for the delay as usual. Anyway, this last point. Shopping for apartment stuff is kinda fun. Ikea is a cool place, i've finally decided and even bed bath and beyond is interesting if you are actually looking for stuff in there and not just waiting for your parents to finish whatever shopping they are doing. When we finally go to her apartment with a new table, frames and a number of fancy decorations we set to work setting it up. I put together the new lamp and the ikea table. There's something about putting something together that is very masculine. Even knocking nails in the wall to hang pictures has a good feel to it. That said, when Tenshi explained to me how to screw the legs onto the table without a drill and I explained to her how to arrange the flowers, there was a bit of role reversal, which shows you that stereotypes are not 100% true, but still I felt quite accomplished. Overall, it was quite fun decking out her place. I have to go back to get the rest of her frames up (I refused to hammer at 1am, much to her displeasure), but we made good progress.

That's all for today. Enjoy the summer warmth!!

Reading: I just bought Game of Thrones because everyone's telling me its good, but I may read the sequel to the Name of the Wind first.

Listening to: Too much pop music lately... I finally go Rehab out of my head though. Every time I hear her name it gets stuck there. Very unfortunate, and sad how unsurprising it was. Brock even said THE NIGHT BEFORE, I bet she's going to die soon. Weirdly prophetic Brock...

Playing: Chrono Trigger though I did return to New Super Mario Bros, Wii and Portal 2 with Heavy Spy last week.

  2. log furniture is available in a number of local log furniture stores, lifestyle and online. The furniture is mostly made by hand, and rarely done with the help of electric drills and other tools.
